🧭 Why Visit

Most of the Amalfi Coast is a road at sea level. Agerola sits about six hundred metres above it, on the ridge, looking down. The coast you have been driving along lays itself out below in terraces and red roofs, and the walk everyone comes for, the Path of the Gods, starts here rather than ending here.

📜 A Little History

The ridge villages fed the coast. Paths ran down from the farms up here to the harbours below, and one of them is now the Sentiero degli Dei. Agerola is still a string of separate frazioni along one ridge road rather than a single centre, and that road is the one the buses from Amalfi climb.

💡 Worth Knowing

Weather arrives here before it reaches anywhere else on the coast. On a September morning the ridge went from clear sun to complete cloud in about five minutes, and the rock came back out of it a minute after that. Carry a layer even when the water below looks flat and blue.

Worth Knowing

  • Walk the Path of the Gods westward, from Agerola toward Nocelle, for the sea-ahead views and the easier grade.
  • Stop at the belvedere on the road up before you reach the village. The whole coast is below it.
  • Cloud can take the ridge in minutes and lift just as fast. If the view has gone, wait rather than driving down.
  • Agerola is a string of frazioni along one road, not a single centre. Check which one your bus stop or your trailhead is in.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Agerola worth a visit on its own?
If you are walking the Path of the Gods you will be here anyway, and the ridge earns an hour either side of the walk. If you are not walking, come for the view down onto the coast, which is a different thing entirely from the view along it.
How do I get to Agerola from the coast?
Buses climb from Amalfi, and by car it is the same ridge road. Either way it is a climb of roughly six hundred metres from the water, so allow more time than the distance suggests.
What is the weather like up there?
Cooler than the coast and quicker to change. Cloud crosses the ridge in minutes and can close the view completely before it clears again.
